Smith School to Bell Street Greenway

A one-mile section of greenway extending from Smith Middle School to Bell Street in Glastonbury is now open to the public.

The public greenway is paved and accessible to all, with a narrower stone dust side path. Ample parking is available at the Smith Entrance and very limited parking is also available at the Bell Street end of the trail. This section of greenway, which is also described as the Salmon Brook Trail, is the first of what is anticipated to be a longer connection across town.

Bike Walk Glastonbury, formerly known as Glastonbury Bikeways, created the Glastonbury Bicycle Master Plan that includes this greenway.

Glastonbury Bikeways anticipates that the next section for completion would extend the current path west to House Street, providing safe access under Route 2 to the center of town. The east-west section of the greenway would provide a scenic alternative to Hebron Avenue, for individuals to use for both transportation and recreational purposes.

    Hello,
When will the paved bike path to Griswold be opened?

Hi Mario — the latest update from the town is that the trail will be open in November. I was down there recently and it looks like they are very close to finishing.

But just to clarify — the trail that they are building will not directly connect to Griswold. It will link the medical park on Western Blvd to House Street, a short distance to Griswold.

Is the greenway open for walking. I was there on June 8, and it appeared to be blocked off.

    • Dennis Desmarais says:

Carolyn — here’s the response from the Parks and Rec department.

Those barriers are there because there has been damage to the bollards that were there previously and the barricades are there to prevent cars from driving down the trail. The trail continues to be open.
